How long does the insomnia last?

I've had terrible insomnia for about 2 months now and it's making me miserable. How long does it normally last? I hope not until the baby is 2 years old! I know once I go on maternity leave and don't have to wake up for work and can nap during the day, life will be better, but I don't feel like I can hack 6 more weeks of this. Everynight I go to bed feeling like I'm never ever going to sleep again (which doesn't help in the falling asleep department)

Does anyone have any ideas or coping strategies?

    I have had insomnia on and off during my pregnancy and it always feels like it is going to last forever while it's happening but with me it does come and go.

    Try not to lie there tossing and turning but if you're not asleep after 20 - 30 mins then get up and do something. I normally get on tribe or watch TV. I am now totally up to date with the Cosby Show :) I'm sometimes up for 1 - 1.5 hours and then I try and go back to sleep. Wait until you're tired before you do this and then get back into bed.

    Only use your bed for sex and sleeping. Read in the lounge until you're ready to go to sleep. Don't try and force yourself to go to sleep when you're not tired.

    I also use a white noise machine that I have for the baby to help me sleep. The sound of crashing waves on the beach work well for me. I also use ear plugs if I need them and a sleep mask to block out all light when I'm ready to go to sleep.

      I have insomnia sometimes too-- it comes and goes:-)

      what helps for me is to just get up if I really can't sleep and read...then go back when I'm sleepy again.
      Baths/ showers also help for me-- cause I'm always a little sleepy afterwards.

      I hope you get to go on maternity leave soon so you can nap in the day!!

        i have also suffered from insomnia during pregnancy and postpartum. nervine herbs, particularly oat straw and valerian root, were the most helpful things for me. herb pharm makes a great sleep tonic tincture with valerian root and passionflower. herb pharm also makes an oat straw tincture. all these are safe for pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
